Christmas is a wonderful time for family, food and festivities, and it’s only natural to want your dog to feel included too. However, while we enjoy seasonal treats, many festive foods can be extremely dangerous for dogs. Every year, dogs become seriously unwell after eating human foods such as chocolate, raisins and other festive favourites, sometimes resulting in emergency vet visits or far more serious consequences. At Iggy Pu

p Dog Care, your dog’s safety and wellbeing are always the top priority, especially during the busy Christmas period.

Feeding dogs human food can lead to vomiting, diarrhoea, lethargy and, in severe cases, life-threatening complications. Foods to avoid include chocolate, grapes and raisins, mince pies, Christmas pudding, alcohol, onions, raw green potatoes, cooked bones (including turkey bones), whole Brazil nuts and anything containing high-cocoa chocolate. Festive plants and decorations can also pose a risk – holly berries, mistletoe and xylitol-based sweeteners are all toxic to dogs. Even well-meaning treats can cause upset stomachs if they’re unfamiliar, so any changes to your dog’s diet should always be introduced with caution and in very small amounts.

It’s not always intentional – curious dogs may help themselves to chocolate tree decorations or leftovers when no one is looking. To avoid an emergency trip to the vet, keep festive foods, decorations and gifts well out of reach of inquisitive noses and paws. With a little extra care and awareness, you can ensure your dog enjoys a happy, healthy and safe Christmas. And if you need reliable support over the festive season, Iggy Pup Dog Care is always here to help keep tails wagging!
